Our last trip was the one I was most looking forward to before we set off. I'd read Stephen E. Ambrose's brilliant account of the preparation and execution of the Pegasus Bridge operation and couldn't wait to see the sights he'd told of.
The day was once again hot and sunny, and as Bill Hick's would say, only fit for lizards. We travelled to Pegasus Bridge by bus. It lies inbetween the two towns of Benouville and Ranville, and is now situated on a strip of land inbetween the River Orne, and the Caen Canal. I say now as the original bridge was moved to be replaced by an almost identical copy. The original is now housed in the grounds of the Pegasus Museum.
All the shops, bars and attractions were packed out, but it added to the day for me. The number of veterans in their blazers was a good sight, and they were very willing to answer any questions and pose for photographs. It was probably my best day of the trip and a fitting conclusion to what was a hugely enjoyable and at times, emotional experience.
